February 26, 2010, Newsletter Issue #273: Why Children need to be Disciplined Consistently

Tip of the Week

Every child craves consistency in their lives, from daily play activities to learning. Discipline is no different. If you discipline your child consistently they will be raised to understand consequences. If I push my little sister down, I will sit in a time out. If you do not consistently discipline you child for “pushing around” their younger sibling then the behavior will continue to be repeated.

Consistently being inconsistent leads to erratic behavior from your child.

You’ll hear from parents all the time, “My little Billy usually behaves so well, I don’t understand why he is acting like this?” Your child will never know what to expect when they repeat unwanted behavior; sometimes they get away with misbehaving and sometimes they do not. They continue to take a chance. If you consistently reprimand your children they will know, when I push down my little brother, a timeout will follow. It becomes second nature.
